The Dade County Board of Education is proposing a property tax increase of 10.49 percent as the school system works to address its budget deficit.

The board has tentatively adopted a 14.530 mill property tax rate, an increase of one mill. Without the proposed tax increase, the millage rate would be no more than 13.150 mills.

For a home with a fair market value of $275,000, school officials estimate the proposed increase would mean approximately $151.80 more in property taxes. For non-homestead property valued at $150,000, the estimated increase is $82.80.

The Board of Education will hold two public hearings Monday, August 17, at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. at 52 Tradition Lane in Trenton. A third hearing is scheduled for Monday, August 24, at 4 p.m.

The board’s Monday agendas also include discussion of the Five Year History and Tax Digest, followed by public input.

Again, the Dade County Board of Education is proposing a 14.530 mill rate, which the school system says represents a 10.49 percent property tax increase.
