The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers are impersonating law enforcement and using the department’s phone number to appear legitimate.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, reports have been received of individuals getting calls that appear to come from the agency’s main phone number, 256-574-2610. During the calls, scammers reportedly claim victims owe court fees, bond payments, or other legal expenses and demand immediate payment.
Officials stressed that the Sheriff’s Office will never call individuals to request money, gift cards, wire transfers, or electronic payments over the phone for any reason.
The agency noted that scammers can use technology known as “spoofing” to make it appear as though they are calling from a legitimate phone number, including government agencies and law enforcement offices.
Residents are urged not to provide personal information, financial details, or payment information to anyone making such requests over the phone. Anyone receiving a suspicious call claiming to be from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office should hang up and contact the agency directly using a verified phone number.
The Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to remain vigilant and report suspected scam attempts to local law enforcement.
