In an interview with Vulture.com, Angus Young was asked to list his favorite and not-so-favorite things about AC/DC.
His most regrettable song is “Love Song” from the High Voltage album. Recalling a few of the lyrics, he said, “When you smile I see stars in the sky / When you smile I see sunrise… I remember that song because the guy who worked for us at our record label told us that’s what was on the local radio at the time — very soft music. His thought we should release that song, because it’ll probably get some airplay. I remember thinking, Who in their right mind would want this to go out?”
He went on to say that the band’s “Saving grace” was that the B-side was “Baby, Please Don’t Go, which radio stations played instead and it became a hit.
When asked to choose his #1 AC/DC song, Young chose two and admitted he was biased because he’s been on them all, but as a guitar player he would have to choose “Riff Raff.” He said, “The guitar work was a challenge but interesting in the way the song rolled out. That’s my guitar answer. But if it’s for a whole song, “Thunderstruck” is a big one.”
With reviews good and bad through the years, he chose a bad one – as his favorites. It was just after High Voltage was released in America in 1976. He explained, “Rolling Stone‘s review called us “one of the worst bands in the world” and had us listed way down at the bottom. I was like, Well, I guess we’ve got room for improvement.”
TL;DR:
- Angus Young says his most regrettable song is “Love Song.”
- His #1 AC/DC song, “Riff Raff,” and “Thunderstruck.”
