Kicking off July’s meeting of the City Commission, Sandy White from the Alliance for Dade provided updates on upcoming webinars and events, including a business webinar and a photo contest by the Optimist Club. She also shared that the recent fair was successful in attracting visitors and residents to the Welcome Center. She then hightlighted upcoming cave tours, a fine arts camp, and car events happening in the city. Various other upcoming events and programs are discussed, including the Historical Society’s Raiders program, the world’s longest yard sale, the fun family art show, and The Optimist golf tournament.
The Police Department’s monthly report was then shared, indicating the number of calls for service, business checks, and incidents. The Parks and Rec department provided updates on the community center and work orders. The Fire and Utilities department reported on answered calls for emergencies or work orders, while the Special department updates on construction projects and remodels. Also mentioned was a construction bid and the progress of farm screens and concrete reform. The Street Commission reported on services rendered on the streets and vehicles owned by the city.
Mayor Case then mentioned attending a conference and a Downtown Development Authority meeting and the need for at least four people in the area of economic interest. Additionally, he mentioned the qualifications required for certain positions and the need for tax incentives for local businesses. Various financial matters were mentioned, including training fire department funds, ARPA funding, and savings funds. They also mention expenses related to the emergency line and a parking lot project worth sixty thousand dollars. One project mentioned was a Christmas lights display, which they hope to have ready soon. Another project mentioned was a National Science Department initiative that involved 270 species.
The library reported on their June stats, including a rise in door count due to their popular Thursday summer reading programs. The police department also participated in a special event where kids got to interact with officers and explore vehicles like fire trucks and ambulances. Mrs. Hayworth also mention the Time with Teacher program, which is a summer reading program that allows individuals to reserve a free book through the library. She emphasized the availability of tutors throughout the school year and encourages sign-ups. She also mentioned upcoming events such as a writing workshop for adults on July 20th.
