The Dade County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to be on the lookout for a growing text message scam targeting drivers by claiming they owe unpaid toll fees.
As part of its “Fraud Friday” public awareness campaign, the sheriff’s office says scammers are sending fraudulent text messages pretending to be from Georgia E-ZPass or Peach Pass in an attempt to steal money and personal information.
According to the sheriff’s office, the scam typically begins with a text message claiming the recipient has an outstanding toll balance. The message often threatens additional late fees or even license suspension if payment is not made immediately. Recipients are then directed to click a link and provide payment or personal information.
Officials say that is exactly what scammers are counting on.
The sheriff’s office emphasized that legitimate toll agencies, including E-ZPass and Peach Pass, do not send text messages requesting payment for unpaid tolls.
Residents are urged to avoid clicking links in unexpected text messages, even if they appear legitimate. Instead, officials recommend checking account information only by visiting the official website of the toll service directly.
The sheriff’s office also encourages anyone who receives one of these messages to report it to their local law enforcement agency. Victims and suspicious scam activity can also be reported to the Federal Trade Commission through ReportFraud.ftc.gov or by calling 1-877-FTC-HELP (382-4357).
The Dade County Sheriff’s Office reminds the public to “think before you click” and stay alert as scammers continue to use increasingly convincing tactics to target unsuspecting victims.
