Rep. Mike Cameron Commends Governor’s Gas Tax Suspension, Touts Benefits for Constituents

ATLANTA – State Representative Mike Cameron (R-Rossville) commends Governor Brian Kemp’s recent announcement that he will suspend the excise tax on motor and locomotive fuel to provide financial relief to Georgia families. Georgians will save 31.2 cents per gallon of gasoline and 35 cents per gallon of diesel fuel.

“I would like to thank Governor Kemp for making this declaration to suspend the state’s gas tax during this time of record high inflation,” said Rep. Cameron. “I am proud of our Republican leadership for recognizing that our citizens need financial relief. Not only will our citizens save money at the pump, but also local businesses and restaurants in our district can expect to see their revenues go up during this period. Since House District 1 shares borders with both Tennessee and Alabama, we expect their residents to cross into Georgia for cheaper fuel. Often times, out-of-towners will come for the cheaper fuel but will also spend money at restaurants and local businesses in our area during their trips.”

Governor Kemp declared a state of emergency on Tuesday, September 12 due to inflation and current economic conditions. The executive order will go into effect on Wednesday, September 13 at 12 a.m. and will remain in effect until 11:59 p.m. on October 12, 2023. Consumers can expect the suspension to begin affecting prices after several days.

Representative Mike Cameron represents the citizens of District 1, which includes Dade County and portions of Walker County. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2020 and currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Human Relations & Aging and the Secretary of the Interstate Cooperation committee. He also serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Human Resources and the Agriculture & Consumer Affairs, Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight, Industry and Labor committees.
