Early Voting Begins Tuesday in Dade County; FLOST and T-SPLOST on Ballot
Early voting begins Tuesday in Dade County for the November 3 General Election, with voters set to decide two major local sales tax questions — FLOST and T-SPLOST.
Advance voting begins Tuesday, October 13, and continues through Friday, October 30.
Early voting will be held at the Trenton Precinct in the Dade County Administrative Building from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Dade County will also offer two Saturdays of early voting:
Saturday, October 17 — 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday, October 24 — 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
FLOST Would Provide Property Tax Relief
Dade County voters will decide the proposed Floating Local Option Sales Tax, commonly referred to as FLOST.
The proposal calls for a one-cent sales tax designed to provide property tax relief by shifting more of the tax burden from property owners to sales tax collections.
Supporters of FLOST have argued that a significant portion of sales taxes collected in Dade County is paid by visitors and people traveling through the county, allowing non-residents to contribute toward the cost of local government.
Voters will ultimately decide whether the proposal is approved.
T-SPLOST Would Fund Transportation Improvements
Dade County voters will also decide a Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or T-SPLOST.
T-SPLOST would provide dedicated sales tax revenue for road paving and transportation improvements in Dade County.
While FLOST and T-SPLOST both involve sales taxes, the two ballot questions have different purposes.
FLOST is designed to provide property tax relief, while T-SPLOST revenue would be dedicated to transportation projects.
