The Trenton City Commission is considering the annexation of 78 acres of property in Dade County near Dade County High School in order to secure a commitment to build a new subdivision of homes proposed by a Texas based developer.

Trenton Mayor Alex Case brought the proposal to the city commission’s attention Monday night in their regularly scheduled workshop session, although the item was a late addition to the meeting’s agenda.

Earlier in the day, Dade County’s current and incoming members along with representatives from the Arlington development group met with The City to discuss the annexation of the two parcels in question; one of 31 acres and the other of 47 acres behind the campus of Dade County High School.

The proposed micro-home neighborhood would consist of 130 lots of single family homes of varying size and design, with all costs borne upon the developer.

Case says the same construction group has built two projects in neighboring Walker County and after a tour of the homes near Ridgeland High School, he’s excited with the prospect of welcoming the first new residential subdivision to Trenton since the inception of Mountain Shadows.

“This company has come in, they’ve come to us and want to be annexed in and we don’t want to say no, we want to get some affordable housing and grow our city they’re willing to put in all the infrastructure in,” said Case after garnering council approval to move forward on the proposal.

Case says annexation of the property is a required stipulation for financing the subdivision’s construction, which he says could move swiftly, as the city works to amend residential zoning codes for accommodating the project.

In other council moves, Trenton city officials approved the purchase of a new auto clave sterilizing unit from SPLOST funds for the WWTA.
