Monday night‘s high winds left a group of kayakers trapped at Nickajack Cave. Around 8:24 pm CST on Monday, TWRA (Tennessee Widlife Resources Administration), Haletown Volunteer Fire Department and other responders were dispatched to the Nickajack Cave Wildlife area for a mass water rescue.
Earlier in the evening a group of kayakers, including some children, had entered the water to tour Cave. The high winds and other factors made it difficult for the kayakers to get back to the boat dock.
The kayakers were able to make it to shore near Nickajack Cave and called for help while three swam to the nearest boat dock.
TWRA and New Hope Fire Department brought boats as Haletown Volunteer Fire Department’s boat was too big for the shallow waters in the area. Marion County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the rescue as well, while Puckett EMS provided medical support and triage.
All 33 kayakers wore life jackets and were unharmed.
