The Who will screen their legendary March 10th, 1973 show from the Netherlands on Saturday (December 4th) to salute the 11 fans that tragically died in 1979. The 12th Annual P.E.M. Memorial honors the 11 fans who perished on December 3rd, 1979 while entering Cincinnati's Riverfront Colliseum prior to the Who's concert that night.
The Who.com posted, “From 6:15 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. EST the Who’s show as part of Pop Gala ’73 at Sporthal de Vliegermolen, Voorburg in the Netherlands will be screened for the first time. The stream — https://bit.ly/3o5VmD3 — will be followed directly by the Alumni Band concert.”
The band added: “We honor the memories of our 11 dear friends who tragically lost their lives on December 3, 1979 on the plaza of Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati, Ohio waiting to see the world’s greatest rock band . . . The Who.”
Back on July 2nd, 2018, Roger Daltrey returned to Cincinnati and visited Finneytown High School to connect with the P.E.M. Memorial Scholarship Fund organizers.
The Who's 1973 Netherlands footage has been available on bootleg for years and shows the band at the early-'70s peak — directly between the respective Who's Next and Quadrophenia eras. Pete Townshend reflected on the musical connection he shared with John Entwistle and Keith Moon: “The improvisation was sadly dependent on me, because I led the band off on these musical exercises. And John on bass and Keith on drums; we tried to play together like an engine. Keith, and John, and I, we tried to track each other. We would try to work together. We'd try and stay right on top of each other as though we were in each other's heads. And there are moments every now and again throughout our career where we, we hit that. And that's always very exciting 'cause it's very strange.”
