The Beach Boys' Mike Love revealed some of the band's plans for its upcoming 60th anniversary. During a chat with In Site Atlanta, Love touched upon a possible project with the group's co-founders Brian Wilson, Al Jardine, David Marks, and longtime member Bruce Johnston.
Love said, "I think there're plans to do something to mark that, but nothing specific as far as touring or anything. But maybe other acts doing our songs, maybe with us, and then so on. Maybe a TV special or something. It should be a lot of fun to bring some of these songs to life, just in different ways."
He went on to talk about the long-in-the-works new Beach Boys box featuring the band's incredible work between 1969 and 1971, explaining, "There's an album compilation that's due to come out pretty soon called Feel Flows. . . There's such diversity. I love all the original stuff that Brian produced, but then when he — not retired, but receded a little bit from the overall production — it was awfully nice to hear the other guys come forward with some brilliant things. . . Several songs that are completely different in substance and subject matter than what came before. But I think that's all welcome, it's all good. In retrospect, it was quite a diversity of creativity."
Aside from his late brothers Dennis and Carl, no one goes back further with Brian Wilson than Mike Love, whose mother Emily was sisters with the Wilson's father, Murry: ["Yeah, the first memory I have of him singing was on my Grandmother Wilson's lap, and he sang 'Danny Boy' — man, I tell you, what a voice. We went through high school together, we would go to football games at his school, my school. Yeah, we experienced our entire childhood and teenage years together as first cousins."] SOUNDCUE (:20 OC: . . . as first cousins)
Mike Love, who's pretty much been on tour since 1962, told us that if performing is what you do, playing live as often as possible can only make you better at it: ["Everybody forgets when they start out they do four or five sets a night in a nightclub, y'know (laughs)? And then all of a sudden if you do more than one show, you're gonna kill yourself, or something — I mean, some people are like that.
