Suspected Road Rage Shooting Reported on I-59 Near Hammondville

Authorities in DeKalb County are investigating a suspected road rage shooting that occurred Sunday evening along Interstate 59 near the Hammondville and Valley Head exit area.

According to DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden, deputies with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, DeKalb Ambulance Service, and the Valley Head Police Department responded around 7:15 p.m. Sunday to 11877 Alabama Highway 117 after receiving reports of a gunshot victim.

Officials say a 31-year-old man reported being shot while driving southbound on Interstate 59. Emergency crews secured the initial scene before the victim was transported by DeKalb Ambulance Service to Erlanger Baroness Hospital in Chattanooga for treatment.

Investigators with the DeKalb County Drugs and Major Crimes Unit responded to three separate scenes connected to the incident to collect evidence and interview witnesses.

Based on evidence gathered and witness statements, investigators believe the shooting was related to a road rage incident that occurred on I-59 southbound near the Hammondville and Valley Head exit ramp.

Authorities say multiple rounds were fired from the suspect vehicle, striking at least two vehicles traveling on the interstate.

Sheriff Welden said investigators have obtained a description of the suspect vehicle and its direction of travel and are currently working with partner law enforcement agencies to locate the shooter.

The victim who was struck by gunfire is reported to be in stable condition and is expected to survive.

The investigation remains active, and additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available.

Sheriff Welden emphasized the dangers of aggressive driving incidents, stating, “Road rage incidents can escalate in just a matter of seconds and change lives forever. We are working diligently around the clock to locate the one responsible.”
