If it seems like more people are packing up for a Fourth of July getaway this year, the numbers back it up.
AAA projects more than 2.4 million Georgians will travel at least 50 miles from home during the Independence Day holiday travel period, which runs from Saturday, June 27, through Sunday, July 5. That marks a one percent increase over last year and sets a new record for Fourth of July travel in Georgia.
The vast majority of those travelers — more than 2.1 million — are expected to drive to their destinations. Air travel is expected to remain essentially unchanged from last year, while cruises and other forms of transportation are projected to see the largest percentage increase.
For Dade County residents, the extended holiday period is expected to mean heavier traffic on major routes such as Interstate 59, Interstate 24, and Interstate 75 as travelers head to beaches, lakes, mountain destinations, and family gatherings across the Southeast.
“For many families, traveling for Independence Day isn’t just a trip, it’s a tradition,” said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Vacations are one category where consumers are still willing to spend, even if that means cutting back on something else.”
According to AAA, approximately 2.14 million Georgians will travel by car during the holiday period, while nearly 164,000 are expected to fly. Another 109,000 travelers will use other modes of transportation, including buses and trains.
Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time, especially during peak holiday travel periods, and to ensure their vehicles are road-ready before leaving home. AAA also reminds drivers to avoid distracted driving, buckle up, and never drive impaired.
With a record number of Georgians expected to travel, roads across Northwest Georgia, including those serving Dade County, are likely to remain busy throughout the Independence Day holiday week.
