Step back in time and discover the fascinating history of one of Northwest Georgia’s most significant coal mining communities.

The Dade County Historical Society invites the public to a special presentation, “The History of the Durham Coal Mine Community,” on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at the Dade County Public Library.

Local historian Doug Carson of the Walker County Historical Society will explore the rich history of Durham, also known as Pittsburg, Georgia, a once-thriving mining community with deep ties to both Walker and Dade counties. Learn about the coal mines, the Chickamauga and Durham Railroad, the convict leasing system, local businesses, and the families whose lives helped shape the community.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to view historic artifacts, including original Durham mine labor records, and are encouraged to bring photographs, documents, and memorabilia related to the Durham community for sharing and preservation.

The program is free and open to the public. To help organizers plan seating, attendees are encouraged to RSVP by emailing [email protected].
