Twelve people were killed in traffic crashes across Georgia during the 78-hour Independence Day holiday travel period, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
The holiday enforcement period began at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, and ended at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 5.
Georgia State Patrol troopers investigated nine fatal crashes, while local law enforcement agencies investigated three additional fatal crashes reported by the Atlanta Police Department, Cobb County Sheriff’s Office and Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.
Troopers also responded to more than 295 traffic crashes statewide, including 15 involving commercial motor vehicles. Those crashes resulted in more than 180 injuries.
During the holiday enforcement campaign, Georgia State Patrol troopers and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers conducted 20,208 traffic stops, issued 10,806 citations and 14,657 warnings. Officers also made 425 DUI arrests, cited 1,099 seat belt violations and issued 235 child restraint violations.
State officials noted the crash and enforcement statistics are preliminary and remain subject to change as investigations are completed.
