As families across Georgia prepare to celebrate Independence Day, AAA – The Auto Club Group is reminding homeowners that fireworks can pose more than just a safety hazard. They can also lead to significant property damage, injuries, and potential liability issues.

While fireworks remain a staple of Fourth of July celebrations, AAA says the risks associated with their use are substantial. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were 11 fireworks-related deaths and approximately 14,700 injuries nationwide in 2024.

The National Fire Protection Association also reports that fireworks sparked an estimated 32,302 fires in 2023, including 3,760 structure fires, resulting in an estimated $142 million in direct property damage.

“Even well-planned fireworks displays can end in injury or property damage,” said Montrae Waiters, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Before the celebration begins, be sure to understand your insurance coverage and take steps to limit potential risk.”

AAA encourages homeowners to review their insurance policies before using fireworks to determine whether fire-related damage, guest injuries, detached structures, and liability claims are covered. The organization notes that coverage may vary if fireworks are illegal where they are used or if they are handled improperly.

Homeowners are also encouraged to document valuable outdoor property and move flammable materials away from areas where fireworks may be used.

In addition to reviewing insurance coverage, AAA recommends several safety precautions, including keeping fireworks away from homes, vehicles, decks, dry grass, and trees. Used fireworks should be thoroughly soaked with water before disposal and kept away from buildings and vehicles.

AAA also advises never allowing young children to handle fireworks, including sparklers, keeping a bucket of water or garden hose nearby in case of fire, and avoiding the use of fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

For the safest Independence Day celebration, AAA recommends attending a professionally organized fireworks display rather than setting off fireworks at home.
