Residents in Dade County and across much of north Georgia are being urged to remain alert for possible flooding as periods of heavy rainfall continue through late Monday night.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City issued a Flood Watch Sunday afternoon for a large portion of north and northwest Georgia, including Walker, Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade and Whitfield counties.

Forecasters say multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected to move across the region through Monday evening, bringing the potential for excessive rainfall and flash flooding.

According to the National Weather Service, an unusually moisture-rich weather system is producing intense rainfall rates that could exceed two inches per hour in some locations. Meteorologists warn that repeated thunderstorms moving over the same areas could quickly overwhelm drainage systems and lead to flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Officials say excessive runoff may cause flooding along rivers, creeks and streams, while urban and poor-drainage locations could also experience high water issues.

The weather service advises residents to use caution while traveling during periods of heavy rain and to avoid driving through flooded roadways.

The Flood Watch remains in effect through late Monday night. Additional weather updates and flood safety information are available from the National Weather Service.
