Drivers returning home to Walker, Dade and Catoosa counties after the Memorial Day holiday weekend are seeing some of the lowest gas prices in Georgia, even as statewide and national averages remain elevated heading into the summer travel season.

According to AAA – The Auto Club Group, the Catoosa-Dade-Walker area is among the least expensive metro markets in the state with an average price of $3.83 per gallon for regular gasoline. Only the Brunswick area reported lower prices at $3.81, while Augusta-Aiken averaged $3.88.

Statewide, Georgia’s average gas price is currently $3.99 per gallon, which AAA says is about 50 cents lower than the record highs seen in 2022.

“Right now, the statewide average for regular gas is $3.99 a gallon, which is still about 50 cents below Georgia’s record high we saw in 2022,” said Montrae Waiters, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Even though prices are holding steady, they’re still high enough that planning ahead can really make a difference for drivers heading home.”

AAA expects heavy traffic on major highways as travelers make their way home following the holiday weekend. Motorists are encouraged to check gas prices along their routes, leave early to avoid delays, and plan ahead to help save both time and money.

Georgia gas prices are one cent lower than last week, but remain 41 cents higher than a month ago and $1.07 higher than this time last year.

At current prices, filling a standard 15-gallon tank with regular gasoline costs drivers about $59.85.

Nationally, gas prices remain at a four-year high for the Memorial Day travel period. The national average stands at $4.51 per gallon, unchanged from last week and $1.33 higher than one year ago. AAA said increased demand and ongoing global supply concerns are expected to keep prices elevated as the summer travel season gets underway.

Among Georgia’s most expensive metro markets are Macon at $4.07 per gallon, Atlanta at $4.04, and Savannah at $4.00.
