Statewide Level 1 Drought Declared; Residents Urged to Conserve Water

TRENTON, GA — State officials are urging residents across Georgia, including here in Dade County, to begin conserving water following a new drought declaration.

On April 27, 2026, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division issued a statewide Drought Response Level 1, citing increasing drought severity and impacts on water resources.

The declaration applies to public water systems that rely on both surface water and groundwater sources.

What Level 1 Means

Under a Level 1 drought response, there are no mandatory restrictions, but voluntary conservation is strongly encouraged to help protect water supplies as conditions develop.

Water Conservation Tips

Officials are asking residents to take simple steps to reduce water use, including:

  • Checking for and repairing leaks inside and outside the home
  • Turning off the tap while brushing teeth, shaving, or washing
  • Watering lawns only when necessary
  • Adjusting sprinklers to avoid watering sidewalks, streets, or structures

Outdoor Watering Guidelines

Residents are reminded that under Level 1 guidelines, outdoor landscape watering is allowed only between 4 p.m. and 10 a.m. each day.

State officials say early conservation efforts can help prevent stricter restrictions later if drought conditions worsen.
