The Dade County Emergency Management released this statement today on Facebook announcing The Georgia Forestry Commission is doing a controlled burn of 400 acres off of Hatfield Road in Rising Fawn, Georgia across from the Pilot. Please do NOT report this burn.
If you have questions about why Controlled Burns happen during drought conditions please read the info below from the Georgia Forestry Commission
You may be seeing — and smelling — more smoke across Georgia right now.
Here’s why.
Drought conditions have increased wildfire risk across the state. At the same time, favorable weather is allowing land managers to safely conduct prescribed burns — one of the most effective tools we have to reduce the dry vegetation that fuels dangerous wildfires.
Prescribed fire is carefully planned and carried out by experienced natural resource professionals under specific weather conditions to keep it controlled.
March is traditionally our busiest burn period. Unusual weather earlier this season put us about a week behind peak timing, so more burning is taking place now.
