As extreme cold weather moves into the area this weekend, Dade County officials have announced the opening of a local warming shelter to help keep residents safe.
The warming shelter will open today at 12 p.m. (noon) and will remain open day and night throughout the weekend for anyone in need during the dangerously cold conditions.
Officials urge anyone who may be without adequate heat, experiencing homelessness, or otherwise vulnerable to take advantage of the shelter as temperatures drop to potentially hazardous levels.
Community members are encouraged to spread the word to friends, neighbors, and family members who may need a warm, safe place to stay during the extreme cold.
Residents are also reminded to take precautions to protect people, pets, plants, and pipes as freezing temperatures impact the region.
