DeKalb County Emergency Management Agency officials confirmed that a Norfolk Southern freight train carrying grain derailed Tuesday near County Road 761 in the Valley Head area.
According to EMA, approximately five to ten rail cars were involved in the derailment. Norfolk Southern crews, along with local emergency personnel, are on scene working to manage the incident and assess the situation.
Officials emphasized that Valley Head School is not in danger. DeKalb County EMA, in coordination with the DeKalb County Board of Education, reported that school operations are expected to experience minimal impact as a result of the derailment.
Motorists should expect heavy traffic congestion in the area while crews work at the site. Authorities are urging drivers to avoid County Road 761 and surrounding roadways and to use alternate routes if possible.
No injuries have been reported, and there is no indication of hazardous materials involved at this time.
EMA officials say they will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as additional information becomes available.
