A strong cold front is sweeping across northwest Georgia, bringing sharply colder temperatures and gusty winds, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters say temperatures will fall steadily through the day as the front moves from northwest to southeast across the region. Residents can expect sustained winds of 15 to 20 miles per hour, with gusts reaching 30 to 35 miles per hour.
Even stronger wind gusts are expected along mountain ridgelines in north Georgia, where exposed areas could experience particularly hazardous conditions.
Gusty winds are forecast to continue overnight, combining with the colder air to produce dangerous wind chills. Wind chill values are expected to drop into the lower teens to 20s across much of the area, with single-digit wind chills possible at higher elevations in the mountains.
The National Weather Service advises residents to secure loose outdoor items, use caution while driving in high-profile vehicles, and take steps to protect people, pets and plants from the cold.
