Overdose Death in DeKalb County Leads to Multiple Arrests

DEKALB COUNTY, Ala. (WDEF) — An overdose death investigation in DeKalb County has resulted in several arrests, according to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO).

On Tuesday, September 9, deputies and first responders were called to a residence in the 100 block of Highway 75 for a medical emergency. When they arrived, they found 53-year-old Kimberly Ann Little deceased inside the home. Authorities noted that drug paraphernalia was visible at the scene, prompting a drug-related death investigation.

A search warrant was later executed at the residence, leading to the discovery of fentanyl, methamphetamine, marijuana, and additional paraphernalia. Based on the evidence, deputies filed charges against three individuals:

  • Vanessa Taylor Whitmoyer: Manslaughter (Fentanyl), two counts of Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance, two counts of Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Tampering with Physical Evidence, 2nd Degree Promoting Prison Contraband, and 2nd Degree Unlawful Possession of Marijuana.

  • Leland James McDowell: 1st Degree Unlawful Possession of Marijuana and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

  • Crystal Lynn Benson: Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Sheriff Nick Welden emphasized the dangers of illegal drugs in the community, stating:
“Illegal narcotics continue to destroy families and communities and put lives at risk. This case is a reminder of the devastating consequences these substances can have. Our office is dedicated to holding individuals accountable in cases where reckless or illegal actions contribute to the loss of life.”
