Local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant after receiving a high volume of calls today reporting phone scams impersonating law enforcement officials.
According to officials, the most common scam involves callers falsely claiming that the recipient has failed to report for jury duty or that a warrant has been issued for their arrest. In some cases, the scammers have gone so far as to use the name of a former department captain who passed away recently, adding an unsettling level of realism to their deception.
“These scams are designed to scare and pressure people into handing over money or personal information,” a spokesperson for the department said. “We want to make it very clear: we will never call and demand money in lieu of arrest. In fact, we will never call and ask for money at all.”
Authorities are encouraging residents to share this warning with neighbors, friends, and especially loved ones who may not use the internet or social media regularly.
Anyone who receives such a call is advised to hang up immediately and report the incident to local law enforcement.
Stay alert—and spread the word to help stop these scams from hurting someone you know.
