The Dade County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the heartbreaking loss of K-9 Georgia, the newest member of its K-9 unit, who passed away on July 13, 2025, following a tragic incident involving her patrol vehicle.
Incident Summary
On the day of the incident, the heat index in Trenton ranged between 100 and 102 degrees. While K-9 Georgia remained in her designated kennel inside a patrol vehicle, her handler was inside the Sheriff’s Office. During that time, the vehicle’s air conditioning system failed due to a malfunctioning compressor that later required full replacement. Compounding the issue, the heat alarm system—designed to alert deputies to rising temperatures—was not operational. K-9 Georgia was left unattended for a duration that the Sheriff’s Office has deemed unacceptable, ultimately resulting in her death due to extreme heat exposure.
Internal Investigation and Accountability
Immediately following the incident, an internal investigation was launched to determine the circumstances leading to the tragedy. As a result of the findings:
-
The handler responsible for K-9 Georgia is no longer employed with the Dade County Sheriff’s Office.
-
The case has been referred to the Dade County District Attorney’s Office for review and to determine whether criminal charges are warranted.
Steps Moving Forward
In response to this loss, Sheriff Cross has directed the following measures:
-
All K-9 patrol vehicles will be removed from service if any critical equipment, including air conditioning systems and heat alarms, is not functioning at full capacity.
-
A complete revision of the department’s K-9 handler policies is underway. Under the new policy, K-9s will not be left unattended in vehicles for extended periods during the summer months under any circumstances.
The Sheriff’s Office remains committed to full transparency. Further details will be released pending the outcome of the District Attorney’s review.
Remembering K-9 Georgia
K-9 Georgia was a gifted and beloved bloodhound, generously donated by a local family at no cost to the department. Known for her sweet and spirited personality, Georgia had shown exceptional potential and brought joy to everyone she encountered.
“She was goofy, full of heart, and truly one of a kind,” said a representative from the Sheriff’s Office. “We are devastated by her loss.”
