Mick Jagger Wasn’t Initially Hot On ‘Goats Head Soup’ Outtakes

Mick Jagger revealed he wasn't particularly thrilled with the bonus material offered up on the Rolling Stones' Goats Head Soup reissue coming this Friday (September 4th). A lighthearted Jagger told London's Sunday Times, "'They’re all terrible!' That’s always my initial reaction, 'They’re all useless!' I mean, actually, I always liked the songs, but they weren’t finished. Sonically, they still sound like they were recorded then, even if they weren’t perfect. You can make them sound a little better than they did. These three songs are all up there with the rest of the songs on this record."

The box set and deluxe CD and vinyl editions of Goats Head Soup will all feature bonus tracks, which include alternate versions, outtakes and three previously unissued tracks — including the song, "Scarlet," featuring guitar by Jimmy Page and bass by Family and Blind Faith's, Ric Grech. Two other songs have long been available in bootleg circles for decades — "Criss Cross" and "All The Rage," which for years had been booted as "You Should Have Seen Her Ass."

A while back, we caught up with Mick Jagger and asked it was difficult to go back to work on the band's early-'70s outtakes without the band's legendary late-producer Jimmy Miller: ["Without Jimmy Miller? It would've been good if he'd of been there 'cause he could've told me all kinds of things that I've forgotten and I didn't have to look up, but, y'know it's always difficult. There's quite a few people that have died since then, not only Jimmy — Jim Price who was the trumpet player. Nicky Hopkins who played on so many Stones records are no longer with us, so y'know, we're thankful for the people that are here."] SOUNDCUE (:19 OC: . . . that are here)
