Over the weekend, Metallica served up an early Christmas gift to fans that attended their Helping Hands Concert And Auction, by performing their new single to a live audience for the first time.

James Hetfield told the crowd, “Since this is such a special gig here, we thought we’d play ‘Lux Æterna’ for you.”

As another surprise, they welcomed St. Vincent to the stage to share vocals and guitar duties for “Nothing Else Matters.” Other celebs included Jimmy Kimmel, Robert Downey Jr., Tom Morello, and Tony Hawk.

Consequence of Sound reported that the set was all acoustic and the band wrapped up the evening with “Seek & Destroy.”

The event was for Metallica’s non-profit, All Within My Hands Foundation which they started 5 years ago. They raise funds at the annual fundraiser for various reasons of need, including to help their community fight hunger, support education, and disaster relief.
