Members of Metallica have not wasted their downtime during the pandemic, instead, they’ve been writing. In an interview with Rolling Stone, drummer Lars Ulrich said the band has engaged in some “serious writing” over the last three to four weeks.

Referring to the world’s problems right now, he said, “It’s so easy just to fall into a depressive state. But writing always makes me feel enthusiastic about what’s next.” He also said that there’s more meaning behind it, than simply writing new music. He called it “much-needed catharsis amid a chaotic year.”

There was no mention of recording any of the music yet, but fans will recall that there were 8 years between the previous two albums.
