USDA to Conduct Rabies Vaccine Bait Drop in Dade County October 21–28
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Wildlife Services will distribute oral rabies vaccine (ORV) baits across Dade County from October 21 through October 28 as part of an ongoing regional effort to prevent the spread of rabies among wild animals.
The annual bait drop, which targets raccoons and other wildlife, was postponed last year due to the widespread damage and recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene in neighboring states. To maintain vaccination coverage, the USDA conducted a make-up drop in April, and the upcoming distribution will continue that schedule.
Officials emphasize that the vaccine baits are not harmful to pets or humans, but they should be left undisturbed when found outdoors. If baits are discovered in areas where children play, the USDA advises residents to use gloves or a towel to pick up the bait and move it to a brushy or wooded area, where wild animals are more likely to encounter it.
The ORV program has been instrumental in reducing rabies cases in wildlife populations throughout the Southeast, ultimately helping protect both animals and people. Residents with questions can contact USDA Wildlife Services or the Georgia Department of Public Health for more information on the program and its safety guidelines.
