With summer just around the corner, Dade County UGA Extension is reminding backyard chefs that a safe grill is a great grill. Whether you’re flipping burgers, skewering veggies, or searing steaks, a little preparation goes a long way in keeping your cookouts delicious and safe.
“Grilling safely begins with planning not only your menu but also your food safety supplies,” UGA Extension experts say. That means thinking ahead before the charcoal gets hot.
Their top tips include choosing fresh, neatly packaged ingredients and keeping raw meats separated from other groceries — from store to kitchen. Once home, it’s critical to store raw meat or poultry in a container or on a plate in the fridge to avoid cross-contamination, especially when thawing or marinating.
UGA Extension will be sharing more food safety tips as summer nears. Until then, grill smart, stay safe — and get ready to bring the heat.
