April’s regularly scheduled meeting of the Trenton City Commission was light on agenda items but heavy on the topic of stray animal care.

As the city works with the county in the proposed construction of a jointly operated Animal Care Facility, the city learned its the recipient of two new grants totaling $6,000, dedicated to greater animal welfare.

Trenton Mayor Alex Case explained the first grant of $1,000 was from proceeds of the sale of Georgia’s specialized license plates, promoting spay and neuter programs.

Mayor Case says Trenton was one of 178 applicants, with only 72 selected for the grant.

Audray Luck of Luck’s Rescue, who has been helping both the City of Trenton and Dade County’s collective efforts toward the proposed new facility, also disclosed a recent $5,000 grant from Miranda Lambert’s MuttNation project for Trenton’s current shelter.

Luck credits the volunteer work of Amanda Terrell, who Luck says took the initiative to successfully apply for the MuttNation grant.

In addition to the grant money, Luck says Lambert fulfilled the current “wish list” of needed items for the city-run shelter.

Luck says she hopes the MuttNation donation is the first of others to follow, telling commissioners of an available $25,000 grant from MuttNation for newly opened animal shelters. Luck believes the proposed new animal facility would be a candidate for the grant, after its first year of operation.

Luck explains only two such grants have been delivered so far by the musician’s organization.

Existing animal welfare grants for Trenton are transferable to the proposed new facility when it is built, says Luck.

Trenton Police Department reports it answered five animal related complaints in March.

In board action, commissioners declared the disposition of an old Ford Tractor from the wastewater treatment plant as surplus property, subject to auction.

Nearing the conclusion of Monday night’s meeting, commissioners went into executive session on two employee matters, per Mayor Case.
