The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program — LIHEAP — officially opens today for the winter heating season. The federally funded program helps eligible Georgians pay their heating bills through direct payments to energy providers.
Beginning today, Dec. 1, applications are open for seniors age 65 and older and medically homebound households. All other eligible residents can begin scheduling appointments on January 2nd. Funding is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis until all money runs out.
For Northwest Georgia — Area 10, residents of Catoosa, Chattooga, Cherokee, Dade, Fannin, Gilmer, Murray, Pickens, Walker, and Whitfield counties must contact North Georgia Community Action to apply.
The phone number is 706-692-5644.
More information is available at NGCAinc.com.
To qualify for LIHEAP, household income must be at or below 60 percent of Georgia’s median income — that’s $34,549 for a single-person household, and $77,071 for a five-person household.
Applicants must provide a recent heating bill, Social Security numbers and proof of citizenship for everyone in the household, and proof of income from the last 30 days.
