Sand Mountain Community Mourns Loss of 14-Year-Old Student

IDER, Ala. — The Sand Mountain community is mourning the loss of Noah Smothers, a 14-year-old student remembered for his kindness, humor, and bright spirit.

New Home Baptist Church shared on social media that Smothers, a member of the church, passed away early Monday due to complications related to the flu. In their message, the church described him as “such a kind young man” and noted that he was recently baptized.

According to his obituary, Smothers graduated from Henagar Junior High School in May and was currently a student at Ider High School.

Henagar Junior High School also shared a tribute on social media, saying Smothers made a lasting impact on the campus community.

“He had a special way of making everyone laugh and smile,” the school wrote. “Mischievous, a little shy, and incredibly kind, he left a lasting impression on everyone. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, kindness, and fun.”

At Ider High School, Smothers was a member of the school’s basketball team. In a statement, the school described him as a true Hornet who embodied strong character and a bright young mind.

“Noah ‘Smo’ Smothers was an Ider Hornet through and through,” the statement read. “He was a friend to many and will be missed dearly by all who knew him at our little school. Please keep his family and friends in your prayers as they endure this difficult time.”

Smothers’ passing comes as flu cases continue to rise across Alabama. Data from the Alabama Department of Public Health indicates that flu cases more than doubled statewide during mid-December, prompting health officials to urge residents to take precautions and seek medical care when symptoms worsen.

The community continues to offer prayers and support to the Smothers family during this time of loss.
