UPDATE: Suspect Still at Large After Two Critically Injured in Dade County Shooting

DADE COUNTY, Ga. — The search continues Tuesday evening for a suspect in a Dade County shooting that left two people critically injured on Michaels Road.

Dade County Sheriff Ray Cross says his office received a call around 10:30 Tuesday morning reporting that two people had been shot in the area.

According to Cross, one victim suffered a gunshot wound to the head and the other was shot in the leg. Both victims are hospitalized in critical condition.

One of the victims was transported from the scene by medical helicopter, while the other was taken by ambulance.

Suspect Believed to Be in Wooded Area

Cross says the suspect remains at large and is believed to be hiding in a wooded area behind the residence where the shooting occurred.

A large multi-agency law enforcement response remains involved in the search.

Agencies assisting include the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia Bureau of Investigation and SWAT personnel.

Cross confirmed investigators have identified a person of interest but said authorities are not releasing a name at this time.

Earlier Tuesday, the Sheriff’s Office asked residents in the Michaels Road area, from Highway 301 to the Alabama state line, to remain inside their homes because of the active search.

Residents were also asked to immediately call 911 if they saw anyone who was not law enforcement walking in the area.

Davis Elementary Placed on Soft Lockdown

The shooting and subsequent manhunt also prompted a soft lockdown at nearby Davis Elementary School.

An additional school resource officer was sent to the school as a precaution. Officials said there was no known direct threat to Davis Elementary.

The investigation and search remain active.
