Georgia DPS Reports Seven Deaths, Hundreds of Citations During New Year’s Holiday Travel Period

The Georgia Department of Public Safety has released its activity report for the New Year’s holiday travel period, showing hundreds of traffic enforcement actions and multiple fatalities across the state.

DPS reports that seven people were killed during the holiday travel period. As of 6 a.m. Sunday, January 4, troopers had documented three traffic crash fatalities, along with 144 people injured in crashes statewide.

Seatbelt violations topped the list of enforcement actions, with 430 citations issued. The agency also reported 346 DUI arrests and 344 citations for distracted driving.

Troopers investigated 295 total crashes during the reporting period. Of those, 41 involved drivers under the influence, and 13 crashes involved commercial motor vehicles.

DPS officials continue to urge motorists to buckle up, avoid distractions, and never drive impaired, emphasizing that safe driving behaviors remain critical during high-traffic holiday travel periods.
