A federal grand jury in Huntsville has indicted a Guatemalan national on an assault charge after he allegedly bit an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer during a traffic stop in DeKalb County, according to U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona.
The one-count indictment, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama, charges Antonio Juan-Juan, 30, with assaulting a federal officer while the officer was performing official duties.
Federal authorities say the incident occurred during a traffic stop in DeKalb County. ICE conducted the investigation with assistance from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.
If convicted, Juan-Juan faces a potential sentence of up to eight years in federal prison.
Assistant United States Attorney Brett A. Janich is prosecuting the case.
An indictment is a formal accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
