The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a jury duty scam that officials say has recently recirculated in the area.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, scammers are calling residents and claiming they missed jury duty. The callers then demand immediate payment and threaten the victim with arrest if the money is not paid.
Authorities say scammers may use the names of actual law enforcement officers or court officials in an attempt to make the calls sound legitimate.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office stressed that neither the Sheriff’s Office nor the court will call residents and demand payment over the phone. Officials will also never ask someone to make a payment using gift cards, cryptocurrency or payment apps.
Anyone who receives one of these calls is advised to hang up immediately, not send any money and never provide personal or financial information.
