The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about another phone scam making the rounds in the area, this time involving callers claiming to represent Sand Mountain Electric.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, residents have reported receiving calls from someone claiming they are two months behind on their electric bill and demanding payment.
Authorities are urging residents not to provide payment or personal information to anyone who calls unexpectedly claiming money is owed.
If you receive one of these calls and believe your account is current, officials recommend hanging up and contacting Sand Mountain Electric directly using a trusted phone number. Customers can then verify with the utility whether there is actually an outstanding balance on their account.
Residents should not rely on a phone number provided by the caller or allow themselves to be pressured into making an immediate payment.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging the public to remain cautious and to share the warning with family members, friends and neighbors who could potentially be targeted.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call should hang up and independently contact Sand Mountain Electric to confirm the status of their account before making any payment.
