The meeting followed a workshop session that began at 6 p.m., where commissioners recognized several national observances, including Child Abuse Prevention Month, National Donate Life Month, and National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. Fire Chief Rodney Ross was also honored for 50 years of service to the New Salem Fire Department.
Infrastructure and Elections Building Updates
Commissioners reviewed several key infrastructure projects, including the Squirrel Town Creek bridge replacement. Officials discussed funding strategies aimed at completing the project while maintaining long-term financial stability.
An update was also provided on the county’s new elections building, with officials noting steady progress as construction continues.
Public Safety and Fire Department Proposal
Public safety discussions included a proposal to combine the New Home and Davis fire departments under a unified structure. The move is intended to improve efficiency while continuing service to both communities.
Officials also highlighted ongoing challenges with recruiting volunteer firefighters, an issue impacting departments across the region.

- Commissioner Bill Pullen reported on infrastructure work, including the Slygo Road bridge closure, progress at Lake Hills, and economic development such as a new Dollar General nearing completion.
- Commissioner Phillip Hartline highlighted residential growth, activity at the sports complex, and preparations for Antique Alley scheduled May 14–17.
- Commissioner Bob Woods provided updates on public health efforts, including an upcoming oral rabies vaccine distribution and services through the senior center and transit program.
- Commissioner Melissa Bradford discussed environmental efforts, including recycling initiatives and an upcoming tire amnesty event.
Financial Stability and County Operations
The board unanimously approved monthly financial statements and investment reports, reflecting stable fund management and continued fiscal oversight.
Chairman Don Townsend also addressed rising insurance costs, staffing needs within Public Works, and ongoing regional planning and emergency preparedness efforts.
Community Engagement and SPLOST Meetings
County leaders announced a transition from the “Coffee with the Commission” SPLOST discussions to a new series of evening community meetings throughout April.
Upcoming meetings will be held at 6:30 p.m. at multiple locations across the county, including Davis, South Dade, New Home, West Brow, and New Salem. Additional meetings in Wildwood and Trenton are expected to be announced.
Officials say the meetings are designed to give residents opportunities to ask questions and learn more about SPLOST projects and priorities.
