Cooling Assistance Available Through LIHEAP Program in Georgia

ATLANTA — Eligible Dade County residents can now apply for cooling assistance through the Georgia Department of Human Services’ Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP.

The federally funded program helps low-income households, seniors, and individuals with disabilities cover cooling costs during the warmer months by providing direct payments to energy providers.

Applications opened April 1, 2026, for Georgians age 65 and older and those who are medically homebound. All other eligible residents may begin applying on May 1.

To qualify, a household’s income must be at or below 60 percent of Georgia’s median income. For example, the income limit is $34,549 for a one-person household and $77,071 for a household of five.

The program is administered locally through Community Action Agencies, including services covering Dade County and surrounding areas such as Walker, Whitfield, Catoosa, Chattooga, Murray, and others in Northwest Georgia.

Funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis until they are exhausted.

Applicants will need to provide documentation, including a recent cooling bill or statement from their energy provider, Social Security numbers for all household members, proof of citizenship, and proof of income for the past 30 days.

Officials encourage residents to contact their local Community Action Agency for details on how to apply and to begin the process early before funds run out.
