Dade County Opens Community Shelters as Cooling Areas During High Heat

Dade County is opening all three of its community shelter facilities as cooling areas as high heat index values are forecast across the area over the next several days.

County officials say the shelters will be available 24 hours a day for anyone who needs a place to get out of the heat.

The shelters are monitored by cameras, allowing county officials to know when the facilities are being used while also helping provide additional safety for those inside.

Tables and chairs will be available at each shelter. However, anyone who plans to remain at one of the facilities for an extended period should bring any personal items they may need, including food and water.

Residents are encouraged to take precautions during periods of extreme heat, particularly when spending extended periods outdoors.
