After a bump in the road last season the Dade County Wolverines started their journey once again. The only setback was having a young team. The challenges that come with having a young team is inexperience. However, this year will be different. The Wolverines returned the majority of last season’s roster, only losing Nate Hurst, H Garmany, Evan Avans, and Harley Russell. The Wolverines already face adversity on the injury side with Cash Christiansen out for the season with a neck injury. But what was once a young team that progressively got better as the season went on, shows a lot of promise this year.
Offensively, the Wolverines return the whole offensive line from last season. Win Garmany returns in the starting QB role. Drew Duble also returns as a tall threat outside for Garmany to throw to. The Wolverines are coming off their worst scoring season since Poston was given the keys, only averaging 16 points per game. The biggest part of that drop off in points was due to a weaker run game than previous seasons, the Wolverines only put up nearly 500 yards on the ground last season. The Wolverines will most likely improve those numbers this season, even while they sling the ball all over the place.
On the other side of the ball the defense loses key players like H Garmany, Nate Hurst, and Evan Avans. Jett Shavers returns on the defensive side and looks to cause chaos for opposing offenses. Jason Monday is returning as the Defensive Coordinator, he has been running the defense since 2020, and last season with the young team had given up 24.3 points per game, only Monday’s second worst average. Now that the returning players understand the system, the defense will likely improve, despite playing in a competitive region. Monday has had three seasons where he has allowed less than 21 points per game and has six shutouts to his resume as a Defensive Coordinator. The defense will most likely be improved this season.
Coach Poston will always say, “We want to win the region.” I spoke with Poston at practice and he said he likes their chances if they stay poised and compete. I also spoke with QB Win Garmany and he said, “The region will be competitive.” Most schools in the region with Wolverines graduated big classes, and it seems the region is anyone’s game. The Wolverines have already traveled to Bowden for a preseason game. They follow with a game at Finley stadium for a preseason match against Chattanooga Prep. The first home game is against Pepperell on August 21, followed by a two-game road trip at Lafayette on August 28 and then Temple September 4. September 11 sees the Wolverines take on Trion at home, followed by back-to-back bye weeks. The Wolverines resume action on October 2 against Fannin County at home, followed by another home game against LFO on October 9. Then begins the hard stuff with a three-game road trip. October 16 versus Chattooga, October 23 at Christian Heritage, and ends with a trip to Gordon Lee on October 30. The final game will be at home against Gordon Central on November 6. All Regular season games start at 7:30 pm eastern, the Finley game starts at 6:30.
