A Heat Advisory is in effect for Dade County and surrounding areas through 8 p.m. Tuesday as hot temperatures and high humidity create the potential for dangerous heat conditions.

The advisory includes Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Gordon, Murray, Walker, and Whitfield Counties. Officials say heat index values could climb as high as 106 degrees during the afternoon hours.

Residents are encouraged to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses, including drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air-conditioned spaces when possible, limiting time in direct sunlight, and checking on elderly neighbors, relatives, and others who may be vulnerable to extreme heat.

Those working outdoors should take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends adjusting work schedules when possible to reduce the risk of heat-related problems.

Officials remind residents that heat stroke is a medical emergency. Anyone experiencing symptoms of heat illness should be moved to a cool, shaded location, and 911 should be called if emergency assistance is needed.
