Snow Creates Hazardous Road Conditions Across Dade and Jackson Counties Saturday
DADE COUNTY, Ga. / JACKSON COUNTY, Ala. — Saturday, January 31, 2026
Snow continues to fall across the region Saturday morning, leading to dangerous and increasingly slick road conditions in both Dade County, Georgia, and Jackson County, Alabama.
Early Saturday, light snowfall was reported throughout the area. In the valleys, some of the snow remained dry and was blowing off road surfaces in spots. However, conditions quickly worsened in higher elevations, particularly on Sand Mountain and Lookout Mountain, where colder temperatures have allowed snow to accumulate.
By mid-morning, additional snowfall created extremely slick and hazardous travel conditions on many roadways.
In Dade County, county and City of Trenton road crews are actively working roadways, while the Georgia Department of Transportation is treating and monitoring state routes.
In Jackson County, Alabama, officials are reporting slick and dangerous conditions on Sand Mountain, particularly in the Bryant and Higdon communities. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution along County Roads 71 and 73, where snow and ice accumulation has made travel hazardous.
Officials in both counties strongly encourage residents to stay home if possible and avoid unnecessary travel, as snowfall is expected to continue and conditions may worsen throughout the day.
Motorists who must travel are advised to:
-
Drive slowly
-
Increase following distance
-
Use caution on bridges and shaded roadways
-
Be especially careful on mountain routes
Emergency officials remind residents that road conditions can change rapidly, especially at higher elevations.
Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring local alerts and weather updates throughout the day.
