City of Trenton Announces Proposed Property Tax Increase; Public Hearings Set for Oct. 23–24
TRENTON, Ga. — The City of Trenton Commission has announced its intention to keep the current millage rate of 4.498, which represents an increase of 0.207 mills over the rollback rate of 4.291. This adjustment will result in a 4.82% increase in the property tax levy for the upcoming year.
According to state law, local tax assessors are required each year to review and adjust property values to reflect changes in fair market value. When property reassessments lead to a higher total taxable value, the city must calculate a “rollback rate” that would generate the same revenue as the prior year — without the reassessment changes.
Because the City of Trenton’s tentative 2026 budget proposes maintaining the higher 4.498 millage rate, Georgia law requires three public hearings before the rate can be finalized.
All residents and property owners are encouraged to attend the public hearings to share their feedback on the proposed increase. Hearings will be held at Trenton City Hall, 12882 North Main Street, on the following dates:
-
Thursday, October 23, 2025 — 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
-
Friday, October 24, 2025 — 6:00 p.m.
Following the hearings, the City Commission will vote on the final millage rate and adoption of the 2026 budget.

PRESS RELEASE ANNOUNCING A PROPOSED TAX INCREASE
The City of Trenton Commission announces its intention to keep the current millage rate of
4.498, an increase of 0.207 over the “rollback” millage rate of 4.291. This will result in a
4.82 percent increase in the property tax levy this year.
Each year, the board of tax assessors is required to review the assessed value for property
tax purposes of taxable property in the county. When the trend of prices on properties that
have recently sold in the county indicate there has been an increase in the fair market value
of any specific property, the board of tax assessors is required by law to re-determine the
value of such property and adjust the assessment. This is called a reassessment.
Then the total digest of taxable property is prepared, Georgia law requires a rollback
millage rate must be computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current
year’s digest that last year’s millage rate would have produced had no reassessments
occurred.
The budget tentatively adopted by the City of Trenton Commission requires a millage rate
higher than the rollback millage rate; therefore, before the City of Trenton Commission
may finalize the tentative budget and set a final millage rate, Georgia law requires three
public hearings to be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions on the
increase.
All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearings on this tax increase to be held at
City Hall, 12882 North Main Street, on October 23, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and on
October 24, 2025, at 6:00 p.m.
