TRENTON, Ga. (October 5, 2025) — The Dade County Board of Commissioners has officially declared October 5–11, 2025, as Fire Prevention Week in Dade County, encouraging residents to take steps to safeguard their homes and families from fire hazards.
Chairman Don Townsend presented the proclamation during the commission’s October workshop meeting, emphasizing the need for household safety and preparedness. He urged families to check smoke alarms, identify potential fire risks, and review escape plans together.
Observed nationwide each October, Fire Prevention Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which claimed more than 250 lives and left thousands without homes. The week serves as a national reminder of the importance of fire safety education and preparedness.
This year’s theme, developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), highlights kitchen safety and the prevention of cooking-related fires — the leading cause of home fire injuries in the United States.
Locally, Dade County’s proclamation encourages participation in community safety initiatives, such as school fire drills, and urges residents to review safety tips provided by local fire departments. Citizens are also reminded to test smoke alarms regularly, keep fire extinguishers accessible, and avoid leaving cooking unattended.
Townsend emphasized that fire prevention starts at home, noting that small actions — like checking smoke alarms and teaching children emergency procedures — can help prevent tragedy.
